Week 2 Matchup - Generals Hitmen Blaze Vipers

Week 2 in the MTFL will feature a rematch of the 2011 championship game between the Franklin Generals and the Lebanon Hitmen and the debut of the newest team in the league, the Bowling Green Blaze, against the Middle TN Vipers.

The 2012 edition of the Franklin Generals look to begin their title defense against a Lebanon Hitmen team coming off a 24-0 shutout victory against the Metro LawDawgs. The Generals ended the Hitmen's 9-game winning streak with their championship game win last season. The Hitmen will be looking to avenge the championship loss that also cost them a shot at winning four consecutive MTFL championships. Both the Hitmen and Generals had stellar defenses in 2011 and both teams finished the 2011 campaign with the top two scoring offenses in the MTFL. The Generals are known for their spread offense passing attack and it will be interesting to see if they can keep that style of play going into the 2012 season with the loss of a few offensive weapons. The Hitmen found success on the ground and through the air last week with a four offensive touchdown performance against a tough LawDawgs defense.

The Bowling Green Blaze will be making their debut in the MTFL against the second year Middle TN Vipers. Very little is known about the incoming Blaze team as the rest of the league eagerly waits to see what kind of a team they will have. The Blaze have acquired some seasoned MTFL veterans such as Michael Skees, Josh Jennings, and Will Pape to help provide the team with some veteran leadership. The Middle TN Vipers pride themselves on being able to run the football out of various power sets and also incorporate the wishbone formation on offense. The Vipers vaunted 4-3 proved to be tough against most MTFL offenses during the 2011 season. This should be an interesting matchup between the two newest teams in the MTFL.

Miscellaneous:

The Hitmen are 6-2 against the Generals since 2006. The Generals only two victories against the Hitmen both came in the postseason. The Generals defeated the Hitmen 19-14 in the second round of the playoffs in 2007 and they also defeated the Hitmen 7-0 in the 2011 championship game. The Hitmen's last victory against the Generals was a 35-6 decision in Week 3 of the 2011 season. No team in the MTFL has been able to start out with a victory since 2005 when the Fairview Fighting Irish made their MTFL debut by defeating the White House Bruisers 22-12. Since 2005, the Springfield Hurricanes, Sumner County Xpress, Hickman-Dickson Redskins, Smyrna Dogs, Murfreesboro Red Devils, Alabama Jets, Middle TN Vipers, and Giles County Monsters all lost their first game as a new team in the MTFL.
